The first of a new product to be launched by the drug manufacturer, Vibravy, was a double-blind, randomised controlled study to compare dapoxetine (Tegretol) with sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra).
We were not able to confirm that dapoxetine was superior to vardenafil, which is a PDE5 inhibitor, in the eyes. The study did, however, find that dapoxetine was as effective as vardenafil in lowering the incidence of premature ejaculation in men with ED.
The study included men aged 18-65 years old and had tried their hand at treating premature ejaculation (PE) for over a decade.
They were prescribed a single tablet of sildenafil 2 hours before sexual activity with the same dose of dapoxetine, with a maximum dose of 5 mg (50 mg of the drug).
The dose of dapoxetine was 5 mg once daily. The men were assessed using a questionnaire to the patient. In the sildenafil-treated group, the mean difference in the total score was -0.8, and in the vardenafil-treated group the mean difference was -0.2. The total score was also significantly lower in the dapoxetine-treated group, with -0.5. The total score was significantly higher in the dapoxetine-treated group, with -0.7. The mean differences in the mean score from the sildenafil-treated group were -0.5, -0.5 and -0.2, respectively. The mean score from the vardenafil-treated group was -0.6, -0.6 and -0.5.
We were unable to demonstrate the superiority of dapoxetine to vardenafil in terms of clinical efficacy.
The researchers conducted a study on 20 patients with PE. The average age of the 20 patients was 55 years old. The average number of sexual partners was 8.9, and the average time for ejaculation was 4.3 minutes. In the sildenafil-treated group, the average total score was -3, and in the vardenafil-treated group the mean score was -1.4.
In the control group, the average total score was -1.8. In the dapoxetine-treated group, the average total score was -1.6, and in the vardenafil-treated group the mean score was -1.4.
There was no significant difference in the mean scores of the control and dapoxetine groups in the eyes and in the sildenafil-treated group. The average differences in the mean scores of the control and dapoxetine groups were -0.1, -0.1 and -0.1, respectively. The mean score from the vardenafil-treated group was -0.3, -0.3 and -0.3, respectively. The average difference in the mean score from the sildenafil-treated group was -0.5.
The researchers also found that, in the eyes, the average total score in the sildenafil-treated group was -1.6, and in the vardenafil-treated group it was -0.9. The researchers also observed that, compared with the control group, the dapoxetine-treated group showed a significant decrease in the number of premature ejaculation events and a significant increase in the time for ejaculation. These changes were statistically significant.
The researchers concluded that dapoxetine was a good choice for the treatment of premature ejaculation, although this was not as effective as vardenafil in this group.
